Chess in Kraków, from club rooms to culture centres

Kraków chess gathers around the club room of Krakowski Klub Szachistów 1893 on ul. Prądnicka, home of a Wednesday rapid and a Saturday series. Nearby are the chess sections of Cracovia and Korona, Dwie Wieże in Bronowice, the Tuesday tournaments of TKKF Drogowiec at the senior club on ul. Sienkiewicza and pub evenings on ul. Czarnowiejska. Culture centres in Podgórze and Prądnik teach children, the Nowohuckie Centrum Kultury hosts the junior leagues, and Wieliczka, Skawina and Zabierzów hold their own tournaments.

Chess960 at a Kraków board

One over-the-board Chess960 event turned up for Kraków: the Cracovia international festival, played around the turn of the year at Hotel Galaxy on ul. Gęsia, keeps a Chess960 tournament in its programme and names a Chess960 winner among its earlier editions. The festival site gives its own dates and no separate day for the Chess960 event, and no club or café page in the area offers Chess960 as a regular game.

Chess960 shuffles the pieces of the back rank into one of 960 starting positions, so memorised openings count for little and both players think from the first move. Between festivals it can be played online at ch960.com.

How the entries are kept

The guide holds 83 entries, 83 of them current. They were built from the register of the Polish Chess Federation, the calendar of the Małopolska chess association, the FIDE list of rated tournaments, the chess-results and ChessPoint tournament listings, and the own pages of clubs, schools and culture centres; the pages were opened between and .

Lists run from the most recent dated trace to the oldest; no entry is ranked, scored or moved up for anyone. Where the pages say nothing about a fee, an hour or who may come, the entry reads “not stated by sources” rather than a guess. The source marks, the two status lines and where the guide stops are explained under how we verify.

A new club, a moved class, a series that stopped?

Kraków’s school-year timetables change every September, and tournaments move between club rooms, culture centres and university halls. If an entry has fallen behind, or a club, school or series is missing, send a short note with a link to a page that shows it.
